I believe that a game should include all directions and explanations in-game. If your game is not easily understood just by playing it, it’s going to get marked down. I may or may not include a few random thoughts about the game, but I will display the final score and a zero-to-four star rating system based on the average of the category scores, rounded up. The scores will determine the ranking. In the event of ties, simply, the game I liked better gets a higher ranking.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
I want to express my utmost appreciation to all the developers here who take valuable time out of their lives to place that value on creating these games for this competition and developing games in general. It is a pleasure to participate with you all, and be entertained by your games, whether they are outstanding by the highest standard or lousy to pointless extremes. I truly enjoy playing, reviewing, and otherwise participating in the Jam discussion board. I even enjoy the games I don’t enjoy, if that makes any sense at all. Thank you for your obvious mighty and tenacious efforts.

I played this game for 3 or 4 long boring ‘game days’ and nothing happened. By then, the music got really irritating. I see the idea of the game — a ‘lemonade stand’ kind of game. I guess I missed something that I was supposed to do, but since there were no directions on how to play, and since it wasn’t intuitive enough for me, I simply couldn’t accomplish anything with the game. I don’t mean to sound so discouraging, just trying to be honest. On the plus side — it looks like you put in quite a bit of work. It looks like you included all the components the player would need to play the game — all the different screens and stuff. The problem is the game didn’t play very well (fun).

I almost quit playing about half way thru the levels, but I didn’t. I made it thru the game and got Tom home safe. I’ll have to pass on dinner, but I’d certainly drink a beer with the guy. This game seemed pretty well made for what it was. I’m not a fan of spiders, so they made me jump a few times, but don’t tell anyone I said that. Overall, the game felt a little too drab and basic. Maybe needed more color, and perhaps some power-ups or something.

I actually played this longer than I thought I would. Nice little casual, arcade game. The upgrades kept me playing longer. The player movement and the way the course changed directions seemed like it could be more fluid somehow. Great choice of music!

Nice idea to change the monsters to the same color as the level. I didn’t like chasing my paint can around. Not a bad game, but seems like it needs something more.

I really liked the music in this. The graphics and explanations/directions to the player were sorely lacking. It would have been nice to know you could dig at the beginning of the game. Also, a little help to know where to dig would have been nice, too. Graphical hints eluding to this would have been great. This would have helped out the gameplay as well, in my opinion. Nice start, but needs some work.

Didn’t quite get the theme because the monsters weren’t monsters, but actors in costumes. But close enough, so only -1. Everything else was on the mark! Lemmings in hell! lol — I love it! Excellent job with the graphics, cutscenes, and I especially loved the black and white TV set!

Well, first of all, when you lose, you have to exit the game then restart the game to play again. Not good. Movement kinda sucked. Sometimes I couldn’t move at all — just no response. The enemy made a bee-line to me which made things even more difficult. Would have been nice to see them wander a bit until they got close, or something. Nice concept, but pretty much unplayable, in my opinion. I was only able to last a few seconds every time I tried to play it.

No sound? Too bad. Great exploration game! Love the letterboxes! I suppose it wouldn’t work without an internet connection tho, eh? -1 for theme because the ‘monster’ looked more like a worm and was never really explained. The game played very well and I hope it is developed further.

-1 for implied violence. Gameplay was good, but made for a really long game. I don’t have a lot of time to spend on playing and reviewing jam games, unfortunately. Graphics were simple, yet effective. Pretty good music – fit the story, but no sound effects. Intro sets the stage well, but the text boxes were slightly annoying to me. They kept telling me to ‘hit any key’. Also, it was confusing at times to realize who was saying what. Personally, I kinda liked the game as a whole and wished I had more time to spend with it. I may come back to this one and try to find the cure to lamacara! :)

-1 for death on spikes. The gameplay is solid, with nice puzzles. Graphics were well done, but so, so tiny! The music and sound were very fitting to the game. Excellent tutorials to help the player along, including an informative ReadMe. I like it, for what it is, but why so small??

Great non-violent monster game, but the monsters fell into oblivion (off screen) when you messed up. -1 for implied death. Should have put a floor there. The gameplay was great. Some pretty tricky puzzles there. The flying monster moved too glitchy, so -1. I didn’t have a problem with the graphics, but they could have been a little better with more animations, maybe. Loved the music — it made up for the lack of sound effects. Sound FX would have added to the game, however. Excellent job explaining the game and walking the player through at first. I really enjoyed playing Monster Mania with my 6-year-old daughter. We made it through the whole game. Yay!! :)

I guess those are monsters, and nobody dies or gets hurt. The gameplay is pretty basic platformer stuff, along with the graphics being really basic. What’s up with the teeny-tiny screen sizes??? Too small, couldn’t see things very well. No sounds whatsoever. No explanations about the game or controls or what to do/capture/get/avoid??? I didn’t care for this entry much, mostly because I had no idea what I was supposed to do.

Not sure if you think a cute duck is monstrous, or if the duck is running from a monster. I would suppose the duck is running from a monster. This wasn’t explained at the beginning of the game, along with the controls and perhaps, play tips, so I’ll just give you the benefit of the doubt. As for the rest of the game, I have no real qualms with it, nor any excitement for it. It was just kinda boring. It would’ve taken FOREVER to save up enough coins to buy upgrades, and then it felt like the upgrades weren’t rewarding enough. The game was way to slow, especially for a runner game. I really liked the double-jump. It helped the game, immensely. The shop was fine, but I’d like to see more in-game power-ups.

This game ran extremely slow. It was a chore to try and play. I couldn’t get past the part that told about using the ‘w’ key. So, this rating is probably not that fair. I saw the monster, but being unable to play the game, I didn’t see if the handicap was used. I rated the gameplay to 0 because I was unable to play it since it was moving so slowly. Your saving grace was the graphics and graphical effects. Very nice. Music was nice but no sound fx. The game was explained decently. I would like to play this game — it looks interesting, but it lagged so badly, I had to give up.

Two horribly laggy games in a row — yikes! Besides the lag, this game is too dark. I suppose because of the title of this game, it requires you to be in the dark, but I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING!!! ;) On top of all that, what is it that I’m supposed to do, exactly? A triple whammy — adds up to complete frustration in no time at all. Like “Little Monster” above, this is probably not a very fair rating, and the game is probably pretty neat, but I was simply unable to play it.

Really creepy, but too many errors to enjoy. I wanted to like this game, but the errors were too prevalent. The graphics were superb and the atmosphere created by the music makes up a little bit for the lack of sound effects. Movement seemed kind of hard to control. The monster seemed to appear too soon, or was just too hard to get away from. Overall, excellent concept and style/presentation! I really liked the line-of-sight mechanism you used!

Great presentation, but the gameplay falls a little short. It seemed easy, but all the while I had a sense that I was missing some aspect of the game. -1 for what looked like blood spurting from the trees. I know, that’s probably not very fair, but that’s what it looked like to me. The graphics matched well and were easy to understand, but some choices were strange. The fence? looked like a pallet. The spinning sheep was weird. I didn’t care for the music choice, but it was ok. Great job on the menu, level, and help screens. It’s nice to know what it is you’re supposed to be doing in a game.

I’m kinda middle-of-the-road about how I feel about this game. It was okay, but not something I’m all that excited about.

The intro flew by so fast I couldn’t read it. Better if you let the player progress the story, instead of automatic/timed. When I got to the game, after being thrown off by a very stiff animated character, I realized I was supposed to collect stuff, I guess. I didn’t know what I was collecting, or why. No sound at all added to the negatives I experienced with this game. Ladders didn’t seem to work right and I experienced a glitch in the movement. I gave a generous score on the Theme/Handicap, but I’m not really sure about the handicap. This game needs more work to have a proper review.

Frickin’ birds!! I didn’t make it to the top. I got to the part where it said I needed more stamina. But I couldn’t find any more. So I quit. Then I realized I wasn’t wearing my headphones. So I played it again. Excellent music! Makes up for lack of sound effects. This time, after being kicked out of the tree hole several times, I finally made it to the end. I can’t say I liked the ending, but hay, you can’t have everything. Good game.

I was hoping for more with this one. I love tycoon games, but this one was lacking. Maybe it needed fences. At least something to corral the ‘monsters’ (dinosaurs?). The people wandered around too much, they should have stayed to the paths. The monsters should have scared them if they got too close and made them leave, or something. Nothing was explained so I don’t even know if I was playing it right. But it didn’t seem finished at all. I really like the idea and what you have accomplished so far! I hope to see this developed further!

I played this for quite a while, but that incessant dripping kept killing me and my flame! What I would do for a good flashlight! Or an umbrella! Or even if I could figure out how to hold my hand over the flame so that tiny drop of water wouldn’t land on the wick every time!! :P LOL!! Good story, nice gameplay mechanic with the pipes, and good puzzles. The intro graphics were a good idea the way they were done, but very kiddish and not artsy, to me. I suggest finding an artist to mimic the style idea post-jam. Also, I think you could do with better sound effects, and maybe some eerie music from time to time. -1 for dying. Funny game! Looks like you could have used a little more time. I really like the idea. The monsters could use a little more animation, maybe. A help file is desperately needed, although after messing around a while I figured out how to play it. The gameboard wandered a little too much with my mouse and didn’t come back into view very well each time. It uses ALL of my energy to move, seems excessive. Great choice in music, but some funny sound fx would be awesome. I have a feeling I will really like this game a lot when it’s finished!

-0 for the installer. Nobody likes an installer with Jam games, but it wont effect your score or review from me. Just don’t do it anymore.

About the game — it’s always fun to smash! Not much strategy, tho. Just run around and smash, smash, and stomp! Smash, stomp, smash! Stomp, stomp, stomp! Rawrrrr! Level 4 timed out while I was button mashing and then… error. Still much fun had here.

-2 for implied monster. The graphics and effects were outstanding! The puzzling gameplay was good. The ‘Sprite’ had some collision problems. Very fitting music, but no sound effects. The presentation was nice, but clearer instructions were needed, for my tastes. One level and no story is not enough, unfortunately. However, there’s enough there to make me want more! I hope to see this developed further.

Space monsters! It’s about time! Beautiful dragon graphics! The planets and rocks didn’t match tho, but I’m letting that slide. Interesting movement mechanic. Made the game difficult, but it was still very much playable. I spent way too long playing this one. I hope to see this refined, post-jam. Why not an F4 fullscreen option? I would have preferred it, unless I missed it somewhere. I suggest different music tracks for the player to choose from. The one was fine, but a selection would be awesome. Cool game.

I got 73 coins. Cool art, good gameplay. Pretty much a straight-forward side-scroller. Excellent job creating a complete game. Not really my cup of tea. I played for a while, then quit in frustration when I had to keep starting over (and over, and over…).

Not bad. The graphics were pretty consistent, though simple and sparse. The movement could use a little tweaking as it was very hard to do the wall jump. Sounds and music were fine. The noisy intro was a little annoying. Why is it a typewriter sound, but when you read it, it’s like someone is talking to you? It didn’t jive with me. Should probably be one or the other. All in all, seems like a decent entry.

-0 for shooting lasers at bankers! The gameplay was so-so. It was pretty easy figuring out how to get thru the level. But then again, I didn’t beat the timer. They bulldozed my house away. I felt like Arthur Dent. I liked this game, but it seemed like some things were a little slow. Probably just me.

Nice physics entry, but (yes, there is a ‘but’) I think it needs a little ironing out. The player is able to double jump sometimes and sometimes not. So stacking monsters isn’t always needed. Not sure if this is intentional, but seems weird. Movement was really slow and was pretty annoying because of it. Great job with the graphics!

This is a really solid puzzle game. However, the puzzles are pretty simple, until the last couple of levels, which is probably a good thing. The music was pretty good, but burned a copy in my head and left some residue. I just hope I’m not dreaming this song tonight.

Nice app!! Not really a game, tho, but that’s okay. My 6-year-old daughter loved it! I would have liked it better if the genes were labeled, eg. eyes, arms, mouth, etc. At least an option for it, anyway. Then, perhaps, a separate room for displaying the monsters you created, instead of along the bottom of the screen. That’s all. Fun stuff!

Oooo… I really like the mechanic in this one! I’m sold!! Except, it was more of a demo than a game. I got to the part where there were a lot of fuzzes, then got stuck. Is that the end? I wasn’t told one way or the other, so that kinda sucked. The jump noise didn’t seem to fit, but the music was perfect. Anyway, really cool idea!

Great name! I got to Stage 4 with 1470 points! The big naked statue things did me in. Funny one-screen arcade with great difficulty progression. Gameplay was a little weird, but whatever. I think you mighthave missed the handicap on this one. The music was kind of annoying. No errors, the game works well in all it’s simplicity. Raining acid blood….yikes!

This seems like a great game, but it’s just not something I’m in to. The coins remind me of Pac-Man. A lot of this kind of game in this jam — stealth. Nice game, for what it is, I suppose, but it was a little boring to me. Excellent graphics and presentation.

-1 for “turn to smoke”. Cheap. Gameplay was okay, really smooth, but kinda boring. Maybe should have had a point system as well as a timer. Timer would run out only to start again — seemed pointless. There were no instructions, except what was in-game. I was a bit confused at first. This is a good start to a game, but it feels like it needs to be developed a bit further.

Really neat looking game, but it took forever to load in between rooms, and it took forever to wait for the circle monster (-1 to graphics) to get by. A lot of waiting in this game, especially when the second level is so hard you keep dying and have to start over. Perhaps I’m just not ‘gamer’ enough to play this game, I don’t know. Music choice was eerily perfect. Presentation was really nice, as were the rest of the graphics. Not a bad game, just too slow for my taste.

Finally, something a little bit different! Sure, it’s basically a ‘lemonade stand’ type of game, but it was really well done. I liked how the monster grew over time. The game was easy to keep up with and gives a good overall experience. I wish I could input my name instead of receiving a player number for the online high score table. Fun had with this simple, but cool game. Here’s my end-screen screenie:

Darn you, Exkakx!! I’m running out of time to review these games and you go and make me play your entire game. :P Very tiny screen size, and no F4 fullscreen option that I could find. Some of the monster sound effects were a bit loud. Great ominous BG music. The “story” buildup was good, too. Nice graphics with the player and the monsters, too bad the baby crawls backwards when following you. Also, this doesn’t effect my rating, but you could add some graphic effects to the door link lines, buttons and doors. I thought the linking of the buttons were a good idea at first, but after going through a couple levels, they seemed to easy. perhaps making ‘spurs’ form off the lines randomly, slowly growing lines outward, blocking potential paths for other colors would spice things up. Really cool game, for as seemingly simple it was. Nice job.

I got 19300 points. Died fighting the weasel. Pretty good game, but I kept jumping when I wanted to shoot and shooting when I wanted to jump. Also, I didn’t like jumping again when I landed because I was late removing my finger from the jump button. Messed me up several times. Very nice graphics with effects. Very good music and sound FX. -2 for violence, it wasn’t bad, but still, you’re shooting at them until they disappear, and they’re hurting you. Very nice polish and presentation. All in all, a very nicely made game, most especially for 72 hours!

Good concept and idea, but it was hard to actually play and feel like you were doing what you were supposed to be doing. I couldn’t figure out how to sleep for a while, somehow I hit the right button. The next day, i had veggies growing, but couldn’t figure out how to get them. I jumped over them and went to the right as far as I could and found the shop and forest, but then the jump wouldn’t work anymore and I was stuck on the wrong side of the house for sleeping. This is when I quit playing. The game could use more animations for the character walking. Not sure if the jump is really needed in this. Also, the long-playing animation for plowing, seeding, and watering could be re-worked. Like I said, I liked the idea for this game a lot, but the actual gameplay fell short, to me.

Excellent graphics and I loved the guard-speak! Good choice in music. I’m not a big fan of stealthy, sneak-around games so this wasn’t all that fun to me. Too much waiting around. The controls could have been explained better, as well. I eventually figured them out, but it was after playing several times until I really knew what I was doing. I wonder if there were other thing that I could have been doing…? Anyway, great looking game, as I am becoming to expect from Lune.
