{"id":1387,"date":"2017-01-14T18:29:23","date_gmt":"2017-01-15T02:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/haymanquarterly.com\/blogs\/?p=1387"},"modified":"2017-01-14T18:47:50","modified_gmt":"2017-01-15T02:47:50","slug":"smalltown-grocery-devlog-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/haymanquarterly.com\/blogs\/blog\/2017\/01\/14\/smalltown-grocery-devlog-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Smalltown Grocery &#8211; DevLog 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t had a lot of time to work on this game, but I&#8217;ve done a few things.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a few people from the GMC, I have a few game title suggestions to make the game sound more fun\/exciting: \u00a0&#8220;Cleanup In Aisle 3&#8221;, &#8220;Attention Shoppers&#8221;, and &#8220;Checkout&#8221;. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t made up my mind about the title, whether keeping it as &#8220;Smalltown Grocery&#8221; or changing it, but the suggestions definitely help get the thought processes flowing.<\/p>\n<p>Mostly, I&#8217;ve been working on sprites. \u00a0I&#8217;ve started an &#8216;art assets needed&#8217; list and have been working through it, though slowly. \u00a0I&#8217;ve made a customer sprite and an employee sprite by modifying the person sprite in two different ways. \u00a0I&#8217;m not perfectly happy with it &#8212; I feel like I could make parts and pieces more interchangeable and modifiable if I separate them out more. \u00a0For instance; leg sprites, upper body sprites, head sprites &#8212; then combine them and color-blend them with code for variety. \u00a0But for now, I have a brownish customer and a black &amp; white employee. \u00a0I also created a shadow to help contrast against the floor. \u00a0Now I&#8217;ll have to give everything else shadows &#8212; doh!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/haymanquarterly.com\/haymangames\/SmalltownGrocery\/promo\/customer_and_cart_01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"160\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/haymanquarterly.com\/haymangames\/SmalltownGrocery\/promo\/employee_and_cart_01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a little stuck with how I want to go about coding the game, as far as laying out the store&#8217;s floorplan. \u00a0My shelves will fit into 32 x 32 grid squares, so I was thinking of using grid collision and pathfinding. \u00a0However, I don&#8217;t want my walls to be 32 pixels thick. \u00a0I want them to be 4 pixels thick. \u00a0So, I&#8217;m trying to figure out how to manage the two different sizings, but I really have no clue about where to begin. \u00a0I found a <a href=\"https:\/\/aigamedev.com\/open\/tutorials\/clearance-based-pathfinding\/\" target=\"_blank\">write-up about using something called HAA* pathfinding<\/a> to do this, but it was beyond my ability. \u00a0Trying to read and comprehend it was turning my brain to mush. \u00a0Maybe with more study and patience I will find a solution, but for now I think I&#8217;ll keep working on sprites.<\/p>\n<p>So, that pretty much sums up my progress. \u00a0Not much this week. \u00a0Probably not much next week, either, but we&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t had a lot of time to work on this game, but I&#8217;ve done a few things.
