I am offering a prize especially for reviewers:

I will play and review games in the order I find reviews of my game.

So, with that said, Snail_Man is first on the list. And in the case that no one new has reviewed my game, I will move to play the games by the reviewers in this voting/review thread. In which case, Cantavanda is next.

HayMan’s Really Real Reviews

Rating system: Each category gets 0 – 4 points, then the points are totaled for score and averaged for a quick-glance star rating.

(After reviewing over half of the entries, I realized my scoring system kinda sucks.  I whipped it together pretty fast.)

Theme & Handicap

  • 0 = Both are totally missing from the game.
  • 1 = Usage is very poor and/or one is missing from the game.
  • 2 = Both were incorporated; usage was less than average.
  • 3 = Both were incorporated; usage was average or better.
  • 4 = Excellent usage of both.

Gameplay

  • 0 = What the …?
  • 1 = Below average.
  • 2 = Average.
  • 3 = Above average.
  • 4 = Fun, easy to understand, and challenging.

Graphics

  • 0 = Hire an artist and/or a graphics coder.
  • 1 = Not good, but representative.
  • 2 = They’re okay, but could have been better.
  • 3 = Above average, easy to recognize.
  • 4 = Beautiful, matching, and nicely animated.

Sound FX & Music

  • 0 = Both were nonexistent.
  • 1 = Horrible or no music and/or some sound effects are awful.
  • 2 = Tolerable music and sound, but not enough.
  • 3 = Great music, sounds were non-annoying.
  • 4 = Perfect music selection and sound effects that ‘fit’ the game.

Intros, Menus, Cutscenes, In-game messaging, Tutorials, etc

  • 0 = None used.
  • 1 = Hard to understand.
  • 2 = Functional, but uninteresting or very plain.
  • 3 = Nicely incorporated and game-fitting.
  • 4 = Excellent use of these peripheral game utilities, enhancing the overall experience.

HayMan Likablility

  • 0 = Completely hated it; won’t play it again. (No offense.)
  • 1 = Didn’t like playing it.
  • 2 = Meh.
  • 3 = Liked it, and might play it again.
  • 4 = Saved it to my hard drive and gave it a shortcut. :)

I believe that a game should include all directions and explanations in-game. If your game is not easily understood just by playing it, it’s going to get marked down. I may or may not include a few random thoughts about the game, but I will display the final score and a zero-to-four star rating system based on the average of the category scores, rounded up. The scores will determine the ranking. In the event of ties, simply, the game I liked better gets a higher ranking.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

I want to express my utmost appreciation to all the developers here who take valuable time out of their lives to place that value on creating these games for this competition and developing games in general.  It is a pleasure to participate with you all, and be entertained by your games, whether they are outstanding by the highest standard or lousy to pointless extremes.  I truly enjoy playing, reviewing, and otherwise participating in the Jam discussion board.  I even enjoy the games I don’t enjoy, if that makes any sense at all.  Thank you for your obvious mighty and tenacious efforts.

The screen following the mouse threw me off at times, but still an enjoyable game. A slight stretch on the theme, but it works. The handicap was perfect. I felt the music and sound were average at best. Overall, nicely done.

Nice start to a game. There’s an error to start the game (luckily it can be ignored), the player moves painfully slow, and there’s a lot (too much) of non-action at first. Non-action is fine, but in this case it seemed to last too long before advancing to the next phase. The speaking tutorial was great and fit the game really well. Music and sound fx need balancing. The graphics were fine, but player animation could use more time invested. I failed to see the ‘disaster’ theme. This was more like a infiltration than a disaster. All in all, nice entry and game idea.

First of all, I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. The game did not explain itself. So I ran back and forth kicking everything. I could jump, but jumping didn’t seem to help me get anywhere. The music was great, but didn’t seem to fit the game. Sound FX were a bit too loud. This game might be better if it was explained better.

Nice smooth platforming. I wanted to like this game, but it wouldn’t allow me to advance to the next level. Message came up saying “No File Found”. I liked the swinging branches (whatever they were), although a little annoying to time just right. The gameplay would have scored a lot higher if I could have played longer. I couldn’t understand the intro story pics — sorry. I hope lukew23 works the bugs and glitches out of this one because it looks interesting.

I actually liked this better than my review, but I doubt that I’ll play it again.  Not much gameplay going on here.  The graphics were drawn quickly, eh?  lol!  Nice ‘buk’, but such an over-done storyline, don’t you think?  Made me smile.  However, since this is technically ‘not a game’ by my standards, it is disqualified from my rankings.  Love you! :)

I’ll be honest.  I didn’t really like playing this game.  It’s an okay idea, but nothing really new.  It was really hard to tell where the ball was in relation to the floor.  Also couldn’t see the ball roll.  Movement was ultra-slow.  No sound what-so-ever.  I applaud the try at 3D, but this game needs more work.

OK — Now that I’m caught up with the reviews of reviewers who reviewed my game so far, and I’m caught up with the reviews of other reviewers reviewing games so far, I’m going to play and review the rest of the games in the order of no particular order.  And so…

This game is kind of a sleeper hit.  It scored a lot better than I thought it would while playing it.  The graphics were endearing, the gameplay was solid as a rock, and great cutscenes.  Music is a bit monotonous, but props for creating it yourself.  Some sound effects would have been nice, too.  I enjoyed playing this and finished it. (I found myself somewhat expecting a spider-boss fight at the end, or something spiderish anyway.)

I went ahead and took a jab at a name for this game.  It was either that above, or “Big Yellow Balls”, so I went with “The Tiniest Game In The World”.  Call me crazy, but I kinda liked this game.  At first, the directional jumping was annoying, but I got used to it and dubbed it a “game mechanic”.  Actually, the gameplay was fantastically smooth and challenging, yet simple to grasp.  I think I got all the yellow balls, but nothing happened.  Oh well, who needs an ending?  It would be neat to see this game on the same size scale, but utilizing more screen space.  Reminded me of old-school Lode Runner.

What can I say?  I’m a huge “Shoot the Pigeon” fan.  I must say that the music selection is quite nice, and the ability to choose players is cool.  Great way to end the series, as a tear comes to my eye.  The graphics got a boost in this rating because they stayed true to the series.  Well done, Rusty.  Well done.

Here’s a game that got me interested with a screenshot, but then I tried to play it.  The game mechanics are smooth, but what the heck is going on???  I’m either just stupid and I’m really missing something here, or there’s nothing.  I liked the graphical style, tho.

There’s got to be more to this game.  I’m coming back to this one.

UPDATE:
Okay — I came back to this one.  I’m going to leave it rated as is.  After much research, I found the walkthrough and walked through this game.  It’s artsy-fartsy, which I love, but in it’s current, unfinished state, just really unplayable.  Too bad.  The “bug” that was stopping me from progressing on my own (besides not knowing what i was doing) was being unable to teleport to the next place (room_2, I presume).  The “space” graphic helper was located below the floating rock. I was trying to stand as close as possible to that graphic, on the edge of the rock, while hitting the space bar. Nothing happened. So I wandered around looking for something I might have missed.  Neat concept and story. You should finish it.

This game was horrendously slow.  Also, the graphics style was neat, but I couldn’t understand what was going on.  I think I picked up an axe, but I’m not sure.  After a while, my eyes started to bug out of my skull trying to focus on the screen.  It was definately moody with the windy sound effects, but no other sounds.  I found it hard to want to play this game.

Nice game.  I especially enjoyed the captivating sound effects!  I scored down that category, however, because I thought some music would have helped the game.  (Perhaps even some humming or whistling to go with the sound effects!)  The gameplay was a bit strange with the big blue screen jumping out at you in between turns.  Also, I think some of the selection squares didn’t work correctly, but I could be mistaken.  All said and done, I really liked this game and will look for an updated version to save to the hard drive. :)

This game is a very nice entry to the jam.  The thing I didn’t like most about this game was the fact that I had to take damage in order to obtain a fire extinguisher.  Then I couldn’t find any med kits to heal myself.  That was off-putting for me as a player and why Gameplay scored only a 2.  Also, I couldn’t understand the talking very well, so I missed some of the explanation at the beginning.  But a great game that adhered to the Theme and was still fun to play, regardless.

Oh my gosh, the water rises so fast!  My tetris skills are lacking and rusty.  Very nice, new twist on an old game!  I enjoyed it, but couldn’t keep up with the rising tide.  I made it about half way on my fourth or fifth try, and then about 90% or so on my last try.  Nice job with the AI, even tho the little guy was a little stupid at times.  :P  Good game.  I didn’t understand the intro/instruction screen at first, but I figured out the game when I played it.

Cool game, but incredibly hard!!  Am I right that the only control is the space bar?  I really liked the simplicity of the game, but could have used a bit of a respite along the way to gather my senses.  But alas, that would be a different game.  -1 to gameplay for frustration factor.  Also, instead of 0 points for Intros, etc (because none were used), this game didn’t really need much in that category, but something at all would have been nice.  All said, nicely done, Hiznopellagio!  Classic arcade action.

Nice job with the game mechanics and the graphics, but your storyline writing needs some help.  I made it all the way through, but I still have no idea what I did. :S  No sound at all, handicap broken, theme questionable, controls were strangely located.  This game seems to have a lot of potential, but as is it’s a bit confusing.

I keep burning up.  I made it about 4 levels deep, but I just can’t pass that one.  Got me stumped.  Then the lava gets me and I’m really stump’ed!  (har har)  Nice game, just need some tweaking, I think.

Cute game, but not explained as well as it should have been.  Nice job, you two.  Loved the graphical style and the music.  Especially liked the granny with the walker.  Forget the handicap and finish this, please.  :)

It’s a disaster when you try to leave the water!  Just stay in the water and play forever.  Dumb, but the first time I saw that bird I laughed my a** off!  And the second time, and the third time….  LOL!

I think I might be having seizures. Lots of flashing lights and meteors and chaos going on.  Definitely the scene of some kind of disaster.  The pixel graphics are pixel perfect, and the effects are the icing on the cake.  The game is smooth, simple to understand, and above all, fun to play.  But whoops, no music.  Oh well.  Sound FX make up for it some.  The most I collected before moving on was 7 coins.  I’m so happy now, but I’m suffering from a bit of a frontal lobe headache….  :)

Excellent work on this story/game!  Some actors, graphics, cutscenes, and more action in between, and this game is perfect.  Excellent story telling and music selection.  Proves there’s more to games than perfect graphics.  Well done.  I hope this game continues to receive development.

Good idea, but needed a little more thought in my opinion.  Why is a meteor collecting coins?  When I slow down, why can’t I see more of what’s in front of me — more time to react to incoming missiles?  What was the point for different speeds anyway?  If I went faster, I couldn’t react fast enough to missles.  Also, the beginning help screen went to fast and I couldn’t read everything.  I liked the music for this, but it needed sound effects.  Nice concept, but needs some work.

OMG!  YAL!!  I totally didn’t see this coming at all.  Truly a disaster!  The room-shaking movement was very nicely done.  The platform trickery is like a double whammy on the theme. The amount of blood is like a triple whammy.  The fact this all came from Yal, whom I thought was less gore driven, makes it a quadruple whammy.  The handicap was botched, but the usage of theme overwhelmingly makes up for it.  This game is disgusting, sickening, nauseating, vertiginous, and really fun.  Nice play.

Awesome!  That was very artsy-fartsy and I loved it!  It reminded me of old black & white sci-fi flicks, probably because of the perfectly fitting music more than anything.  Smooth engine, though the slowing down while falling from a jump was a little weird.  The graphics were simple, but the game as a whole largely made up for that.  Sounds also, but the sounds and graphics compliment each other nicely. The ending was sooooo gratifying when I reached the ship with only 4 seconds left!  Perfect!

Pretty good-looking Galaga clone.  Ultra, heavy-duty bullet hell bosses.  How can anyone possibly beat this game?  Luckily, there’s a glitch and I have endless lives even though it says I have zero left.  Another nice glitch was being able to keep shooting when I wasn’t even there.  Unfortunately, these glitches render the game pointless since there is no fear of dying or losing the game == minus points to gameplay.

This is a funny game.  The handicap was blown, but the theme survives.  Texting + driving = disaster for sure.  Good on you for the public awareness message.  Excellent usage of sound for gameplay.  This game would have been tough to use music in so not many review points lost there, but here’s an idea:  Version II could include a dash radio and music, perhaps on higher levels.  :D   Thanks for the laugh.

Very nice TDS.  I enjoyed playing this one.  The music was a perfect fit.  The handicap was thrown out, but great use of theme. +1 for multiple disasters. Nice polish on this game and fun to play, but I kept running out of bullets after the zombie level, and the space bar didn’t seem to work.  Also, the movement and shooting got me confused a few times and it was hard to change weapons.

Nice enough game, but needs a little more work.  I experienced a  glitch.  During the game, the plants quit spawning and I was left wandering around the level.  Also, was there more to it than just running around on the first level killing plants?  And it seems I’m unable to destroy the spawning machines??  Cool 80′s techno music, seemed to fit nicely, but intro music was weird.  Also, did not follow handicap.  I figured out how to get the high score, though. Big Smile

I survived 36 years.  Great game!  It was noisy, extremely noisy.  And loud.  But, everything seemed to fit.  I really liked this entry.  Too bad about the handicap, but the playability, replayability, polish, graphical beauty, and the fact that just about every major disaster known to man was included (except compound interest, of course), makes up for not heeding the handicap. Bravo to Joh for a game well made!  This game is one of my top favorites for this Jam.

Nice looking game.  The AI enemies need a little help to let the player have a chance at shooting them.  The controls are awkward.  Left hand controls seem backward to me. Very pretty game, but no sound.  Seems like a solid engine.

Not really what I wanted to do.  Too late now, I can’t change it.  Then, I guess, I nuked Moscow.  And now I’m done.  This must be a MMOG.  I suppose I have to wait to see what happens next?  Nice idea, but not enough explanation for this game.  Should have scrapped the handicap for this.

Excellent game.  I liked the guitar music.  Was it intentionally slightly out of tune?  Either way, I still liked it.  Nice use of shield, also.  I had thought of a similar game idea.  A game with glitches that you had to play through to fix the glitches, but that idea was a little beyond what I thought I could pull off.  So “Bravo!” to you for pulling it off, and with a nice little story to boot.

I got to a level with two walls that opens with a bunch of applause.  Was that the end?  Because I couldn’t figure out how to get past those walls.  Funny and fun game.  Programming that kind of physics is beyond me, so of course, I think it’s amazing.  Besides that, it felt right, too.  The gameplay was kinda trial and error, but the game was still fun.
